Walentin Alexandrowitsch Serow grew up in the family of the composer Alexander Nikolayevich Serov . After attending High School for a short time, Ilya Repin taught Serow (from 1878 to 1879) in Paris and Moscow. In the period from 1880 to 1885 he attended the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts under Pavel Chistyakov . Repin and Chistyakov also had a lasting influence on his early work.
